It’s Futile to Resist!

Over the years, it always seems to me things have happened on the hottest of days and severe thunderstorms, on one such sweltering day I answered a call of a domestic disturbance (an argument amongst family). This is an officer’s most dreaded call, who wants to go to a house and take care of a family’s issues and to protect themselves from each other, dreaded yes, but necessary. This is also a type of call that gets more officer’s seriously injured or killed than any other worldwide.

On this particular disturbance call, a quick check from my dispatch showed that there had been multiple calls from this house or nearby neighbors over the last couple of years, so when I was met in the yard by a very large intoxicated individual who said he wanted to whip some pig ass, it wasn’t any great surprise. Because of his intoxicated state and the fact of his threat, he had to be taken into custody. As soon as I told him I was arresting him and to turn and place his hands behind his back, the fight was on! Drunks are not usually as tough as they think they are so it didn’t take much to take him to the ground after a quick leg sweep, but that is usually when the trouble starts, they don’t have to worry about balance anymore so they can resist even more violently. One of my brother officers showed up to assist but while we were busy trying to put the handcuffs on him, all of a sudden someone jumped on my back…. I wonder who that could be! That’s right, his battered wife! She was just as intoxicated and obviously injured by her husband because of the black eye and bloody nose she was sporting. I had no other choice so I flipped her over my back and she landed flat on her back knocking the wind out of her which bought us enough time to handcuff hubby and then I went to handcuff her. They both were screaming profanities at us the entire time and continued to do so the entire trip to the police station. When I started to process them into the cities booking system I asked them their name and of course, they both lied and gave false names, dates of birth, etc… so I fingerprinted them both and ran them through our National Database finding out they both had felony warrants out of our city and were wanted out of another state, SURPRISE! Come to find out that when they both sobered up the wife admitted that her husband had actually used a handgun to beat on her, though all she had was bruises according to a Matron that checked to make sure she did not need medical attention. Needless to say that all of the charges added up put them both away for quite a while, and a trip out of state. Sadly enough it is the kids that are always the ones to truly suffer aren’t they, these three were very fortunate though in the aspect that they got to stay together and the Department of Human Services let them go stay with the grandparents until they became of legal age from what I understand. I would say probably ninety percent of the time alcohol plays a very large part of domestic disturbance calls, rule of thumb, if you can’t be a damn grown up and drink without getting a smart mouth with those whom you share a roof with, maybe you should choose something else that is not going to ruin everyone in the houses lives, shit, play Monopoly or something!
